Tabletop Exercises 101

Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth
— Mike Tyson

Regulations, clients and insurance are all starting to ask for an annual tabletop exercise. This is a foreign concept to many small businesses, but it does not have to be difficult! CGP recently published a simple powerpoint that you and your team can use to walk through a ransomware attack and hit the key points of discussion. This template goes through a typical ransomware event, including how to leverage insurance, PR concerns, internal team communication, and more. A tabletop is intended to generate discussion and identify concerns from your team, and give you a roadmap of items to address.

You should be performing a tabletop every year, after completing your annual risk assessment. Remember that something is better than nothing - do not let perfect be the enemy of good! Even using a quick template like this one is a big improvement than doing nothing. A good tabletop should cover:

  • Internal communications & decision making

  • Disaster Recovery processes and planning

  • Client communication
